She did it! Secerna-sponsored physics graduate completes solo Atlantic row with new race record

News 10/02/2023

A lot has happened since 23-year old physics graduate Miriam Payne set sail to tackle the world’s toughest rowing challenge with our support. We’re delighted to say that she has completed it, setting a new race record to become the fastest woman to row solo from La Gomera to Antigua.

Miriam set off on 12 December last year from La Gomera in the Canary Islands on her mission to complete the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge and raise money for two worthy causes: Hull and East Yorkshire Mind and Wellbeing of Women.

This week, she crossed the finish line at English Harbour in Antigua after 59 relentless days at sea, singlehandedly rowing 3,000 miles. At times she has battled high winds and waves that have claimed her oars, not to mention encounters with whales and sharks along the way.

The secret to her success? Don’t think too far ahead. In her post-race interview, Miriam acknowledged the highs and lows of the race, saying, “Anytime I was having a rubbish day it was always over things I couldn’t control. So I tried to think about hitting the next stroke, and the one after that. Don’t think too far ahead, just think about the next stroke.”

Secerna Partner Jason Boakes says, “It has been a pleasure to support Miriam on this incredible journey and we have watched in awe as she made her way across the Atlantic. Her team name – Seas The Day – is very apt, and her can-do attitude is an inspiration.

“Miriam completed her first 500 miles at sea on Christmas Eve. She celebrated with what has become a tradition at every 500-mile stage of the race: a chocolate orange and a can of Irn Bru. As she crossed the finish line this week, it seemed only fitting for the Secerna team to celebrate by raising an Irn Bru to her and tucking into chocolate oranges!

“We send our heartfelt congratulations to Miriam on completing the race and becoming the fastest solo female rower to do so: she has achieved something very special, and we are in awe of her determination and resilience.”

Miriam has raised over £12,000 for Hull and East Yorkshire Mind and Wellbeing of Women. To help her reach her £15,000 fundraising target, visit: https://www.seastheday2022.com/donate.
